A family tragedy lies behind the death of George Georgiou, the 30-year-old Larnaca resident who was killed in a road collision on the Kellia-Troulloi road on Sunday evening.
Georgiou, an employee of the Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (EOA) in the Water Supply Department, leaves behind his wife and two young children. He had become a father for the second time only a few months ago. His eldest child is seven years old.
According to police, Georgiou had borrowed a high-powered motorcycle belonging to his best man in order to carry out some mechanical checks and was planning to return it later that evening.
At around 7.30pm, while travelling along the Kellia-Troulloi road, he reportedly lost control of the motorcycle under circumstances that remain under investigation.
The motorcycle crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a car carrying a family of four.
Police officers and ambulance crews were called to the scene and the injured were transferred to Larnaca General Hospital.
Doctors confirmed the death of the 30-year-old rider.
The occupants of the car, two parents and their children aged four and two, received first aid treatment and were later discharged.
The female driver of the vehicle tested negative in both alcohol and drug tests.
No helmet worn
Preliminary investigations by Larnaca Traffic Police indicate that Georgiou was not wearing a protective helmet at the time of the collision.
A post-mortem examination found that death resulted from a severe traumatic brain injury sustained in the road crash, highlighting the force of the impact.
The Larnaca EOA issued a condolence statement following the fatal accident.
