A total of 25 park-squares in various neighbourhoods across Limassol are set to enter a new era in the coming period, with the design process for their renewal now in full swing. The parks, existing sites selected by the Municipality for a complete overhaul, are being redesigned through a process that takes residents' views into account, particularly those living near the parks themselves, who are taking part in various stages of the design through presentations and public consultation. The parks have been divided into five geographical zones, awarded through open tender to two different architectural teams. On Tuesday, the preliminary study for Zones A, B and C was presented, by the project's planners, Ioakim-Loizas Ltd, who have been commissioned to prepare the study for those three zones.
At the heart of the design is an emphasis on greenery, with the planners making clear that all existing trees will be preserved, alongside new plantings. Particular importance is also being placed on using soft, permeable surfaces to increase water absorption and reduce the hard surfacing that currently dominates many of these spaces.
The interventions also include more natural shading, upgraded playgrounds, improved lighting and the use of durable, low-maintenance materials. The aim is for the parks and squares to take on more varied uses, becoming spaces for everyday activity for residents of the surrounding areas rather than simply places people pass through.
Particular attention was given to the need to create activities for teenagers, an age group often overlooked in the design of public parks. Along the same lines, it is proposed that space be set aside for free artistic expression, so that certain spots can host art and creative activities.
Residents, interested citizens and members of the Limassol Municipal Council took part in the public consultation, submitting comments and suggestions that have been recorded and will be examined at the next stage, before the designs are finalised.
