Investment and access to financing will play a decisive role in shaping the future of healthcare in Cyprus, according to Eurobank, which highlighted the sector’s growth potential at the 9th Cyprus Healthcare Conference on 17 September.
Industry representatives at the conference discussed the challenges and opportunities shaping healthcare, with particular emphasis on digital transformation, innovation, Artificial Intelligence and the development of a sustainable healthcare ecosystem in Cyprus.
Financing healthcare growth
Speaking at the conference, Eurobank General Manager of Wholesale Banking Phoebus Stasopoulos highlighted the role of financing in developing the healthcare sector, arguing that a modern health system cannot evolve without investment and access to capital.
He said the role of banks extends beyond conventional lending, with financial institutions increasingly acting as strategic partners supporting growth, innovation and transformation across the sector.
According to Stasopoulos, healthcare in Cyprus has evolved into a dynamic area of the economy in recent years, with Gesy acting as an important catalyst.
Private investment, new infrastructure and growing investor interest are also creating further opportunities for expansion.
Stasopoulos said the challenge is not simply to ensure that capital is available, but to channel it effectively towards projects and business models that create value for patients, investors and the wider economy.
Consolidation and technology
Stasopoulos also highlighted increasing consolidation within the healthcare industry.
He said larger-scale operations can facilitate greater use of technology, support the provision of more specialised services and strengthen competitiveness.
However, he stressed that expansion must be underpinned by a clear strategy, strong corporate governance and sustainable business models.
Cyprus as a regional healthcare hub
The conference also highlighted the potential for Cyprus to develop into a regional healthcare services hub.
Stasopoulos identified areas including medical tourism, rehabilitation centres, health technology and research as sectors where Cyprus could capitalise on its comparative advantages.
Achieving that ambition, he said, would require cooperation between banks, investors and healthcare providers around a common long-term vision.
Eurobank pledges continued investment support
Stasopoulos said Eurobank remained committed to supporting investments that improve the healthcare sector’s competitiveness, international reach and sustainability, while also contributing to the development of the Cypriot economy.
The bank said its participation in the 9th Cyprus Healthcare Conference reflected its wider commitment to sectors offering high added value and strong growth potential.
Its stated objective is to support the development of a modern, resilient and innovative healthcare ecosystem in Cyprus through financing and strategic cooperation.
