Processing of individual income tax returns for the 2025 tax year has reached 49% of the level recorded during the corresponding period last year, according to Tax Commissioner Sotiris Markides.
Speaking to CNA, Markides said that by Friday, 25 September, 167,100 taxpayers had started the process of completing their returns.
Of these, 144,800 returns have been submitted in final form, while another 22,300 remain registered as “Temporarily Received”.
Taxpayers urged to complete submissions
Markides stressed that temporarily registered returns are still considered outstanding and urged taxpayers to proceed with final submission as soon as possible rather than waiting until the last minute.
For the 2024 tax year, 337,400 returns were submitted in final form.
The final number is expected to be higher this year because of the continuing expansion of Cyprus’ tax base.
Who must file a tax return
Employees, pensioners and self-employed individuals with gross annual income exceeding €19,500 are required to submit an income tax return.
The TAXISnet system automatically calculates the amounts due for income tax, contributions to the General Healthcare System (Gesy) and the Special Defence Contribution.
Any outstanding amounts are automatically transferred to the Tax Portal and must be paid electronically.
Deadline set for 31 October
The deadline for both final submission of the tax return and payment of any amounts due without interest or penalties is 31 October 2026.
Taxpayers are being urged to complete the process on time, particularly following an increase in the penalty for late filing.
As part of the tax reform aimed at strengthening compliance, the fine for a late tax return has increased to €150, compared with €100 in previous years.
