School construction projects that had been delayed by budget constraints and funding cuts are now advancing towards implementation.
According to updated information provided to Politis by the Ministry of Education's Technical Services, a total of 28 mature projects are now progressing, including new school buildings, extensions, upgrades and improvements to existing educational infrastructure.
Speaking to Politis, Andreas Marangos, head of the ministry's Technical Services, explained that the 23 projects highlighted by the Audit Office mainly concerned health and safety works in schools, many of them linked to overcrowding issues, which were prioritised because of their urgency.
However, the total number of projects that had been ready to proceed but remained unimplemented stood at 28. "As we speak today, all the projects are moving forward," Marangos said, noting that they are either already under implementation or formally included in the Ministry of Education's planning programme.
The development follows the Audit Office's special report on prefabricated classrooms, which warned that delays in constructing permanent school infrastructure were prolonging public schools' reliance on temporary facilities.
The report noted that some prefabricated classrooms introduced as temporary solutions continue to be used more than a decade later, stressing that new schools and extensions to existing facilities offer the only long-term answer to overcrowding.
New schools and extensions
According to the Technical Services Department, some projects have already been incorporated into the 2027-2029 Medium-Term Fiscal Framework, while others are under construction or have secured funding through School Boards.
Among the projects are:
- A new STEM, Sports and Music Gymnasium in Larnaca
- The new Voroklini-Livadia Regional Primary School and Kindergarten
- The Fourth Primary School and Kindergarten of Ypsonas
- A new Sports Gymnasium in Paralimni
- A new Gymnasium in Paphos
The programme also includes:
- Extensions to primary schools and gymnasiums in Nicosia, Larnaca and Paphos
- Building upgrades and seismic reinforcement projects
- New public kindergartens
- Maintenance and refurbishment works
- Improvements focused on school safety and functionality
Projects under way
A separate list published yesterday outlines projects planned for the 2026-2027 school year, either already under construction or scheduled to begin this year.
The combined value of these projects exceeds €125 million.
Major projects include:
- New Limassol Technical School and Pedagogical Institute branch (€33.7 million)
- Saint Lazarus Green Professions Technical School in Aradippou (€36.5 million)
- Replacement of Deytera Primary School (€7.3 million)
- Seismic upgrade and refurbishment of Constantinople Gymnasium (€6.6 million)
- Extension and seismic upgrade of Limassol's Second Technical School (€6.5 million)
Officials believe the acceleration of these projects will help address overcrowding, reduce dependence on temporary classrooms and improve learning conditions across the public education system.
