Paphos Municipality is moving ahead with a proposal by DIKO municipal councillor Antonis Christodoulou, vice-chairman of the municipality's Public Health Committee, to install waste bins with integrated ashtrays and upgrade existing bins with metal attachments that can also be used for cigarette disposal.
According to a municipal statement, an initial 15 to 20 upgraded bins will be installed, with further locations to be upgraded gradually.
The municipality described the measure as a practical, safe and cost-effective solution, costing just over €50 per bin, while making use of existing infrastructure without requiring major new investment.
The initiative aims to reduce the disposal of cigarette butts in public areas, protect the environment and beaches, and improve the appearance of the city through modern and functional infrastructure.
Christodoulou said the success of the effort would depend not only on infrastructure but also on public environmental awareness, respect for public spaces and individual responsibility.
He also thanked the municipality's Health Service, the Public Health Committee and fellow councillors for their cooperation in implementing the initiative.
"We continue with proposals that are turned into action and projects that improve the daily lives of residents and the quality of life in our city," he said.
