The Special Report by the Audit Office on the planning and implementation of projects in the Akamas National Forest Park confirms serious, long-standing weaknesses in the protection of the area, according to BirdLife Cyprus. The organisation points to breaches of environmental conditions, inadequate oversight, and shortcomings in the planning and environmental assessment of the projects.
BirdLife calls on the government to implement the Audit Office’s recommendations immediately. Among other things, it calls for illegal activities to be addressed, the necessary decrees on conservation objectives and measures to be issued, and the projects under the Akamas Sustainable Development Plan to be reassessed.
At the same time, the organisation welcomes the Audit Office’s intention to refer the report to the Attorney General so that it can be examined whether there is reason to investigate possible offences.
