Cypriot voters abroad delivered a clear victory to AKEL in the parliamentary elections, with varying trends emerging across different countries.

A total of around 6,400 voters were registered at overseas polling stations, the majority of them in Greece, where 4,306 were registered. Overall, AKEL topped the vote with 1,467 ballots and 34.2%, followed by DISY with 1,087 votes and 25.3%. ELAM came third with 384 votes and 8.9%, followed by Volt with 345 votes and 8%, DIKO with 293 votes and 6.8%, and ALMA with 198 votes and 4.6%.

AKEL maintains lead in UK

AKEL also secured first place in all three countries. In the United Kingdom, it recorded its strongest performance, with 381 votes and 38.2% of valid ballots. DISY followed with 223 votes and 22.4%, while Volt ranked third with 137 votes and 13.7%, despite failing to enter parliament. DIKO secured 6.4%, ALMA 5.4% and ELAM 3.9%. Turnout in the UK reached 63.4%.

Greece sees stronger ELAM performance

In Greece, which hosts the largest share of overseas voters, AKEL again came first with 975 votes and 33.6%. DISY followed with 776 votes and 26.8%, while ELAM recorded its strongest performance abroad, with 328 votes and 11.3%. DIKO secured 6.9%, Volt 4.2% and ALMA 4.0%, while Direct Democracy received 2.9%. Turnout in Greece stood at 68.3%.

Belgium highlights Volt’s presence

In Belgium, where overseas polling stations operated for the first time, the picture differed with respect to smaller parties. AKEL remained in first place with 111 votes and 28.0%, while Volt recorded a strong showing with 86 votes and 21.7%, close to DISY’s 88 votes and 22.2%. DIKO and ALMA each registered 7.1%, while Direct Democracy secured 2.8%. Turnout in Belgium, specifically in Brussels where two polling stations were set up, reached 70.1%.

Compared with the 2021 parliamentary elections, the results confirm that overseas voting continues to favour AKEL, particularly in the United Kingdom. At the same time, Greece showed a marked increase in support for ELAM, while Belgium produced the most notable result for newer political formations, driven primarily by Volt’s performance.

Limited impact for Direct Democracy

Direct Democracy, led by MEP Fidias Panayiotou, had limited impact among overseas voters, securing just 119 votes in total, or 2.8%. Its strongest showing was in Greece with 85 votes, also at 2.8%.
