The capacity of MP is incompatible with the office of minister, mayor or municipal councillor, as well as with the capacity of member of the armed forces or the security services, and with any other public office or position. Therefore, candidates who were elected as MPs last Sunday and fall into the above categories will be called to choose between the parliamentary seat and the public position or office they hold.
As emerges from Sunday’s election results, three newly elected MPs will have to resign from the public positions they hold due to incompatibility. These are the following:
Deputy mayor in the Municipal District of Aglantzia, Andreas Constantinou. He was elected MP for Nicosia with the DISY ticket. In this case, by‑elections will have to be held. The Ministry of Interior is already promoting the required procedures.
Municipal councillor in the Municipality of Lakatamia, Anastasia Hasikou. She was elected MP for Kyrenia with the AKEL ticket. Her position will be filled by the first runner‑up of the party, Antrea Koulermou.
Municipal councillor in the Municipality of Limassol, Michalis Fellas. He was elected MP for Limassol with the DISY ticket. The position will be filled by the first runner‑up, Michalis Vasileiou.
Due to this incompatibility, several MPs of the outgoing House, more than 10, were obliged to resign from senior positions in the public and wider public sector, receiving, however, as compensation a pension from the state regardless of age, the amount of which is determined based on their years of service.
