Cyprus has strongly condemned the bombing of a crowded café in central Damascus, expressing solidarity with the victims and their families.

In a statement on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry said the attack in the Syrian capital’s Al-Hijaz district had killed civilians and left many others injured.

It extended its condolences to the families of those killed and wished the injured a swift recovery, adding that the perpetrators “must be held accountable immediately”.

The explosive device detonated on Thursday inside a café near the Palace of Justice. Syrian authorities said the bomb contained metal shrapnel, while no group has so far claimed responsibility.

The ministry also reaffirmed Cyprus’ support for stability in Syria, describing it as vital to security across the wider region.
