Police are to assess whether any offences may have arisen from the online financial support campaign for journalist and author Makarios Drousiotis. The move follows confirmation on Wednesday that a letter requesting the examination had been received.
The development came just hours after police told Politis that no relevant document had yet arrived. At the time, officers said the letter would be reviewed once received before a decision was taken on any next steps.
Letter received at midday
According to information obtained by the Cyprus News Agency, the letter was received by police around midday on Wednesday.
Police Communications Branch officer Marina Christodoulidou confirmed to CNA that it had been sent by the president of the Licensing Authority for Nationwide Fundraising Campaigns.
She said the authority had asked police to examine whether any offences may have arisen in connection with Drousiotis’ financial support campaign.
The letter will now be assessed before police decide whether any further action is required, Christodoulidou said.
Earlier confusion over delivery
Earlier on Wednesday, Politis contacted police to ask about the status of the case and was told that no letter had been received.
The Interior Ministry, however, told Politis that the document had been delivered by hand and addressed to the Chief of Police.
After being informed that the letter had not been logged as received, the ministry issued instructions for a copy to be sent again. The latest information indicates that the copy has now reached police.
