An alleged personal data breach linked to his book ‘Mafia State’ is also being investigated by police.

Police are awaiting guidance on an online appeal launched by journalist and author Makarios Drousiotis to help cover his legal defence costs. The request followed a letter from the authority responsible for licensing islandwide fundraisers.

Police await legal opinion

Police Spokesperson Vyron Vyronos told CNA that the force had written to the Legal Service seeking an opinion on Drousiotis’s appeal for financial support towards his defence against criminal prosecution.

The letter was sent after police received correspondence from the President of the Pancyprian Fundraising Licensing Authority.

“We are awaiting the response,” Vyronos said.

Personal data complaint under investigation

Vyronos also confirmed that a complaint against Drousiotis concerning an alleged breach of personal data in connection with his book Mafia State remains under investigation.

Crowdfunding reaches €52,874

In a post on Sunday, Drousiotis said the crowdfunding drive had reached €52,874.63 within 36 hours, with the net amount standing at €46,586.49.

“These funds are sacred and will be used exclusively for the purpose for which they were offered,” he wrote.

Drousiotis said that, to ensure full transparency and accountability, all accounts, receipts and payments would be audited by an approved auditing firm. The resulting financial report would also be made public.
