Young people aged 18 to 30 across Cyprus are being invited to apply for a programme aimed at bringing communities together to address environmental challenges and promote peace.
The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the British Council, through its Youth Connect programme, are launching the sixth edition of the UN Youth Champions for Environment and Peace initiative.
The programme brings young people from different communities in Cyprus together in intercommunal teams, giving them the opportunity to learn from experts, build partnerships and develop joint environmental projects.
More than 140 young people have graduated from the programme over the years, while more than 1,000 people across the island have benefited from actions carried out by participants.
Organisers say former Youth Champions have gone on to become advocates for peace and environmental sustainability, with some establishing organisations focused on peacebuilding, trust-building and climate justice, while others have joined policy and non-profit organisations.
Participants will develop environmental projects
Selected participants will take part in a series of in-person workshops at the Ledra Palace Hotel in the UN Buffer Zone in Nicosia.
The workshops will take place on 3, 4, 10 and 11 October 2026 and will bring participants together with climate activists, peacebuilders, experts and mentors.
During the programme, participants will explore ways of addressing environmental challenges through joint action, connect with young people from across Cyprus and work in teams to develop environmental initiatives.
Teams will also receive a small grant and ongoing mentorship to help turn their ideas into reality, with actions expected to be implemented by February 2027.
Who can apply?
The programme is open to people aged 18 to 30 from any community living in Cyprus.
Applicants should have a strong interest in environmental and peace issues, be able to participate in all of the workshops and be willing to work in intercommunal teams.
A very good command of English is also required.
No previous experience is necessary.
Participation in the programme is free, and participants who complete the full programme will receive a certificate.
Applications close on 20 September
Those interested in taking part must submit their application by 20 September 2026.
