Turkey’s ruling AKP is preparing to submit a new legislative package to the Turkish Grand National Assembly after Eid al-Adha, including a draft bill on the country’s maritime jurisdiction zones, according to the Turkish news agency Anka.
The proposal, which concerns exclusive economic zones and the continental shelf, is expected to be tabled after the Eid al-Adha holiday period, which ends on May 30.
According to Anka, work on the draft is being carried out in coordination with Turkey’s Foreign Ministry, while technical reports have also been prepared by the Naval Forces Command and the Coast Guard Command.
AKP officials say the legislation is intended to define Turkey’s maritime jurisdiction areas in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea, as well as its continental shelf in the Aegean. They described it as a “basic law” that would set out the rules Turkey intends to apply in areas it regards as falling under its jurisdiction.
The draft remains under preparation and, according to the reported timetable, will be submitted to the presidency of the Turkish parliament after the holiday period.
