A flight from Newcastle to Heraklion made an emergency landing at Thessaloniki’s Makedonia Airport early on Monday following a disturbance on board. The aircraft later continued to its destination after police removed and arrested the passenger.
Disturbance on board
According to Hellenic Police, the man appeared to be intoxicated and allegedly behaved aggressively towards crew members and fellow passengers during the flight from the UK to Crete.
He also allegedly refused to comply with instructions issued by the crew.
The disruption prompted the captain to divert the aircraft to Thessaloniki, where it landed at around 1:30 a.m.
Passenger arrested
Airport police arrested the 42-year-old after the aircraft landed.
Police opened a case file against him in connection with dangerous interference with air transport, failure to comply with the captain’s instructions and disturbance of order, under the Code of Aviation Law.
Once the passenger had been removed, the aircraft resumed its journey to Heraklion.
