Israel has appointed Joel Lion as the new acting chargé d’affaires at its diplomatic mission in Ankara, despite the continued closure of the Israeli embassy in Turkey.
According to Turkish newspaper Karar, Lion previously served as Israel's ambassador to Armenia and Moldova and has now been tasked with leading Israel's diplomatic representation in Turkey.
Accreditation completed
The Israeli diplomat visited Turkey's Foreign Ministry in Ankara on Wednesday to complete accreditation procedures and formally take up his new duties.
His arrival comes at a time when relations between Turkey and Israel remain strained, with developments in Syria continuing to be a major point of disagreement between the two countries.
Signal of diplomatic engagement
According to Karar, the decision to appoint a new head of mission is being viewed as a step towards easing tensions between Ankara and Tel Aviv.
While relations remain fragile, the move suggests that diplomatic channels are being maintained despite broader political disagreements.
The appointment follows months of strained ties and reflects efforts to preserve communication between the two governments amid ongoing regional challenges.
