Representatives of Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan held talks with Iran’s leadership in Tehran as part of contacts by the so-called “Mecca Alliance” on regional security, according to the Turkish press.

“The Mecca Alliance went to Tehran,” Hurriyet writes, while Milliyet highlights the meeting with the headline “The table was set in Iran.”

Those taking part in the talks were Ibrahim Kalin, head of Turkey’s MIT; Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Defence, Khalid bin Salman; and Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir.

According to the reports, the discussions covered developments in the Middle East, the situation in Palestine and Lebanon, and regional security issues.

Haberturk columnist Nasuhі Gungor says Iran has expressed interest in the Alliance. However, no agreement on Tehran joining or on a new defence pact was announced.

According to the joint statement by the four countries, they agreed to continue consultations on regional security.
