The President of the European Council, António Costa, thanked on Saturday to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, expressing his appreciation for the hospitality and his energy, as the island hosted the informal European Council meeting on Thursday and Friday, in the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.
Costa also promised to return to Cyprus following the informal EU Summit that took place in Ayia Napa and Nicosia.
“Thank you, dear President Christodoulides, for your hospitality and the wonderful setting you provided for our discussions," Costa said in his post on X.
“If I may borrow another familiar word with Greek roots, thank you for your energy. If synergy reflects what we achieve together, then energy is what drives us forward,” he added.
Synergy and friendship
Referring to a slip of the tongue he made in his statements for the informal Summit in Nicosia, Costa promised to return to Cyprus. “I will return to Cyprus—and by then, I will have mastered the pronunciation of Ayia Napa.”
Earlier, in a post on X Christodoulides referred to Costa, the slip of the tongue, and his good humor, noting that: “One word you already know how to pronounce perfectly through your work is ‘synergy,’” adding that this is exactly what the European Council has been putting into practice under his leadership.
“We would be delighted to welcome you back to Cyprus for more visits, more discussions, more friendship, and perhaps a short pronunciation seminar along the way. Until then, thank you for the friendship, the work you do for our Union, and above all for the spirit of synergy,” Christodoulides concluded.
