Annita Demetriou said statements by Emmanuel Macron highlight that the security of the Republic of Cyprus is a European priority.

In a written intervention, the leader of DISY said Macron’s “clear and strong” positions underline, in the most direct way, that Cyprus’ security concerns are firmly placed within the European agenda.

She added that, combined with the expected signing of the SOFA agreement in June and growing discussion around activating the EU’s mutual defence clause, a stronger security framework is taking shape for the country.

Demetriou stressed that these developments are not coincidental, but rather the continuation and confirmation of a long-standing strategy.

She said this approach was first set out by Glafcos Clerides, namely that Cyprus’ security is ensured through deep integration into European and Western structures and through strong strategic alliances.

According to her, DISY has consistently supported this policy, which enhances Cyprus’ geostrategic role, strengthens its international standing and creates real conditions for deterrence and security.

“In an unstable geopolitical environment, Cyprus cannot proceed with illusions or isolationism,” Demetriou said.

She added that the country must invest in alliances, credibility and institutional strength, concluding that this is the path that has been set, is delivering results and should continue with consistency and responsibility, away from populism and divisive rhetoric.
