The public service broadcaster CyBC launches its first round of opinion polls this evening, almost seven months to the May parliamentary elections, to be held during the Cyprus EU Presidency.

The poll will be presented in two parts, the 2nd of which will be held tomorrow.

It is described by the station as a 'political culture and voting behaviour' image, including current voting intentions (tomorrow), political party power, balances and possible shifts.

Speaking on CyBC's noon current affairs programme, deputy head of news Petros Constantinou said that 'surprises and shifts have indeed been recorded', without elaborating, adding that the poll will also deal with voter's opinions on many aspects of daily life, including the economy, corruption and social affairs, as well as international developments.

What he described as a unique aspect of the poll, is a first time look on opinions regarding the repercussions of the 1974 Turkish invasion, what the younger generations are aware of in terms of events and where they were getting their information from.

A taste of what's to come will be offered up tonight, at the 2000 main bulletin by election analyst Yiannis Mavris, a long time CyBC associate, with a two hour programme following the conclusion of the evening news.

The poll, conducted by MRC Cypronetwork, will also be carried live on the station's third radio programme and webpage.

It is the first in a series of opinion shows in the run up to the elections that will feature discussions and exchanges between party leaders, candidates, academics and political analysts.

As the deputy head of news said, 3 to 4 polls will follow, in February, March and April, with an exit poll on election day.
