President Nikos Christodoulides on Wednesday thanked Ursula von der Leyen for the European Union’s substantive support in tackling the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, as well as for her active involvement in efforts to restart negotiations on the Cyprus issue.
The two leaders held a bilateral meeting at midday in Brussels.
In a social media post, Christodoulides said he had discussed key aspects of the European agenda with the European Commission President, noting that “the Cypriot Presidency continues to deliver”. He added that they also exchanged views on strengthening their commitment to de-escalation in the wider Middle East and on supporting regional partners.
He also expressed his gratitude to von der Leyen “for the substantive support to Cyprus in our joint effort to address the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease”.
The Cyprus problem
On the Cyprus problem, Christodoulides said he conveyed his appreciation for von der Leyen's "unwavering support and active participation in our efforts to restart negotiations, with full respect for the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and EU law”.
Concluding his remarks, he stressed that “the EU has proven that it can turn crisis into opportunity. This is the path we continue to follow. United, we are stronger.”
CNA reported that despite a request for comment, no statement had yet been issued by the European Commission regarding the content of the meeting.
