Remarks by Hulusi Akar have reignited attention around the Cyprus issue, after the senior Turkish official issued a controversial warning linked to Easter.
Akar, who serves as head of the defence committee of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, referred to Cyprus as the “homeland of the Turkish Cypriots” and warned that those “who dream of Easter will experience their last Easter”, prompting concern over the tone of his comments.
The statement comes amid a renewed push by Akar for a two-state solution on the island. Earlier this month, he argued that the existence of two sovereign and equal states in Cyprus is, in his view, an inevitable outcome.
His remarks add to an already sensitive political climate surrounding the Cyprus issue, which remains a central point of contention in regional diplomacy and continues to carry broader geopolitical implications.
The intervention is likely to draw reactions as discussions around the future of the island remain stalled, with positions on both sides largely unchanged.
