Ambassador of Ukraine to Cyprus Sergii Nizhynskyi told MPs in Nicosia that Kyiv will never recognise the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,” condemning the ongoing occupation of the island’s northern areas. He was speaking at the House of Representatives during a meeting between members of the Ukraine–Cyprus Friendship Group of the Verkhovna Rada and the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Outlining Kyiv’s position, the head of the Ukrainian delegation, MP Oleksandr Tkachenko, briefed Cypriot counterparts on the latest developments in the war and said the country seeks peace. He added that talks remain difficult because Russia’s conditions are extremely harsh, but he expressed hope that current consultations could produce a workable outcome. According to the delegation, issues under discussion for an eventual plan include Ukrainian force levels and questions related to Donetsk, which are expected to feature in a forthcoming meeting between the presidents of Ukraine and the United States. Background materials published by Ukraine’s embassy in Nicosia confirm sustained parliamentary outreach and recent coordination between Nizhynskyi and Tkachenko.

Tkachenko also invited the House to recognise the 1932–33 Holodomor famine as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. More than 30 countries have taken such a step, while Ukrainian communities in Cyprus have formally asked the Parliament to adopt recognition. Supporters argue this is not only a matter of historical justice but would also strengthen bilateral ties.

Kyiv’s categorical rejection of recognition aligns with the established UN line and with Cyprus’ own stance on sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Ukrainian appeal on the Holodomor places a specific ask before the House that, if adopted, would add Cyprus to the group of states recognising the 1932–33 famine as genocide and would signal deeper political alignment with Ukraine as European diplomacy intensifies over a possible peace framework.
