Nicosia Loses a Seat to Paphos as Voter Numbers Shift

A drop in Nicosia’s electorate -driven partly by the removal of deceased voters- means one parliamentary seat will move to Paphos, pending a legal amendment.

The final word will rest with Parliament, as the redistribution of parliamentary seats among electoral districts requires an amendment to the law.

The number of parliamentary seats per district has now been finalized based on the updated electoral register. Although the picture will be fully clear in the coming days, pending the review of objections, it is considered certain that one parliamentary seat will shift from Nicosia to Paphos.

This means that Nicosia’s seats will decrease from 20 to 19, while Paphos will see an increase from four to five.

This change was influenced by the number of deceased voters removed from the register, 1,260 in total,  while new voter registrations did not exceed 500. However, for the transfer of the seat from Nicosia to Paphos to take effect, a legislative amendment is required. This means that a majority of parliamentary parties must agree, a decision likely to depend on whether the change serves their political interests.
