The Vyzakia dam overflowed on Sunday, becoming the ninth small dam in Cyprus to do so this year, as April continues to record unusually strong water inflows.
According to the latest figures, inflows over the past three days reached 1.266 million cubic metres, lifting total dam capacity to 38.8% on Monday, April 27, from 38.5% on Friday morning.
Although overall inflows have eased in recent days, dams are still receiving around 0.400 million cubic metres of water per day, a level considered satisfactory for this time of year.
The Vyzakia dam had dried up in December, with its capacity falling to just 0.1%. Its overflow on Sunday marks a sharp turnaround following the recent rainfall.
Second-best April on record
Total inflows for April have so far reached 22.026 million cubic metres, making this the second-highest April figure recorded since the construction of Cyprus’ major dams and the start of systematic measurements in 1987-1988.
Further inflows are expected in the coming days, although April 2026 is not expected to surpass the record set in April 2019. Current estimates suggest the month will close with total inflows of around 23 to 24 million cubic metres.
Dam capacity is expected to continue rising until at least early May. Whether reserves keep increasing slightly or begin to stabilise will depend on further rainfall in mountain and semi-mountain areas, as well as temperature levels.
