Two medical units offering oncology services are expected to begin operating in the near future in Larnaca, serving patients from the city and district as well as from free Famagusta.

The Day Care Unit for Cancer Patients is scheduled to operate on part of the second floor of the new wing at Larnaca General Hospital. According to the latest update on progress, the unit is expected to be ready to start operating in the final quarter of 2026. Larnaca MP Andreas Apostolou told Politis that, in its initial phase, the Day Care Unit will provide supportive services to cancer patients from the two districts, who are currently forced to travel to the capital for such care.

At a later stage, the aim is for the unit to offer the full range of oncology services currently provided by the State Health Services Organisation at Nicosia General Hospital.

At the same time, alongside the Day Care Unit at Larnaca General Hospital, the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre plans to open a new centre in Larnaca by the end of this year, offering comprehensive oncology services. The new centre will be housed in the building currently under renovation on Papanikoli Street, formerly the Pissaridis building, on the road leading to the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium. The same building will also offer haemodialysis services, easing the burden on kidney patients in Larnaca.

The German Oncology Centre

Apostolou noted that efforts in recent years to bring recognised oncology centres to Larnaca extend beyond the Day Care Unit at Larnaca General Hospital and the forthcoming Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre on Papanikoli Street. He recalled that the German Oncology Centre already operates outpatient clinics on Faneromeni Avenue, while Dr Giorgos Astras has begun providing oncology services at the Saint Raphael Clinic.

“It is very important for the public to know that all of the above oncology services will be provided under the General Healthcare System (GeSY) and will therefore be offered free of charge to patients,” Apostolou said. He added that the goal should be to develop and operate additional medical centres in the city and district of Larnaca, whether by the State Health Services Organisation or by private providers within GeSY, in order to further upgrade the quality of medical care provided to patients.
