Two people were arrested on Sunday at Larnaca Airport after undeclared cigarettes were found in their luggage as they were preparing to depart for Manchester, United Kingdom.
According to a statement by the Customs Department, customs officers at Larnaca Airport carried out inspections on May 3 following an assessment of information. The checks concerned two passengers of Bulgarian nationality who were due to travel to Manchester.
During the inspection, officers found 127 cartons of cigarettes, each containing 200 cigarettes, in the luggage of the first passenger, and 119 cartons of 200 cigarettes in the luggage of the second passenger. The cigarettes did not bear the required health warnings in Greek and Turkish, indicating that they were duty free tobacco products.
The two individuals were arrested for flagrant offences, while the tobacco products were seized.
The arrested individuals are expected to be brought before the Larnaca District Court on Monday morning so that a detention order may be issued.
