From 3 October 2025, roadworthiness certificates (MOT) will be cancelled for vehicles that have not completed the airbag recall, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works has announced, as it steps up a public-information campaign.

According to the Ministry, “an extensive public awareness campaign on vehicle recalls related to defective airbags has already begun, as part of our policy to strengthen road safety and protect human life.”

The new campaign runs through September 2025 and includes television and radio spots, billboards, press notices and digital outreach, aiming to provide timely, targeted information to all vehicle owners, especially those affected by the recall.

The Ministry notes that “from 3 October 2025, cancellations of roadworthiness certificates (MOT) will take effect for vehicles whose airbag recall has not been completed within the eight-month timeframe set by ministerial decree.”

Implementing the cancellations is described as a critical preventive measure “to avert serious risks, since, according to the manufacturer’s risk assessment, the airbags covered by the recall may, under certain conditions, pose a fatal danger to passengers.”

All vehicle owners are urged to visit www.gov.cy/mtcw to check whether their vehicle is affected and to schedule timely replacement of the defective component. The recall is free of charge and ensures the vehicle remains both legal and safe, the announcement concludes.
