Marking World Teachers’ Day, Eurydice – the European network that provides analysis and information on education systems and policies in Europe – unveiled an updated interactive platform that maps teachers’ and school heads’ salaries across 37 European countries.
The data, collected in cooperation with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and national experts, offers a holistic, comparative view for all levels of education, from pre-primary to upper secondary.
Regarding Cyprus, while teachers’ starting salaries are slightly above the median, at €26,600 per year (2023/2024), Cypriot teachers enjoy significantly strong salary progression: at 15 years’ service, the platform shows the third-highest pay among countries, at €50,576 per year. By career end, teachers’ salaries in Cyprus reach €66,323, with only Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland higher.
The European Commission’s platform does more than display figures: it delves into key questions about Europe’s education systems, such as how teachers’ and school heads’ pay compare across countries; how salaries change with experience and over time; and how school heads’ remuneration is affected by school size and administrative responsibilities.
Users of the online tool can explore salaries and allowances, filter by education level, qualifications and school size, and track earnings progression across career stages. The platform also lets users export charts and download data for further analysis, making it a useful resource for researchers, policymakers and educators.
