The three-day detention of the 22-year-old driver of the vehicle in which the unfortunate Aliki Nikolaou, 17, from Lymbia was a passenger, and who lost her life yesterday in a traffic accident on the Limassol–Nicosia motorway in the Kofinou area, was ordered on Sunday by the Famagusta District Court.

The Police are investigating offences against the suspect including causing death by negligence, careless driving, refusal or avoidance of providing a breath sample for a final alcohol test, dangerous condition of vehicle components, driving without a roadworthiness certificate, and driving without a circulation licence which had been suspended by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

According to the Police, the driver tested positive with 37 mg instead of the legal limit of 22 mg in a preliminary test he underwent, and he refused to take the final test.

The suspect’s defence lawyer did not object to the request for his client to be detained.

The legally required autopsy on the body of Aliki Nikolaou will be carried out Monday by forensic pathologist Orthodoxos Orthodoxou.
