Cyprus Police have launched an investigation following a Channel 4 report that alleges the possible commission of criminal offences in Ayia Napa.

According to information published by politis.com.cy, the investigation is focusing on a video that has been widely circulated online, with police efforts currently aimed at identifying individuals who appear in the footage.

Meanwhile, the Municipality of Ayia Napa issued a statement emphasising that the reported incidents do not reflect the overall image of the area. Mayor Christos Zannetou reiterated a zero-tolerance policy toward illegal practices and harassment.

The Channel 4 report has attracted international attention and placed Cyprus, and Ayia Napa in particular, under scrutiny. The documentary brings to light serious allegations of unacceptable working and living conditions, as well as incidents of sexual harassment targeting young British women who travel to the island for seasonal work through a specific agency. Following the public outcry and the documentary’s global impact, Cyprus Police initiated an ex officio investigation to examine the allegations in detail.

As part of the documentary, a journalist from the British broadcaster travelled secretly to Cyprus and used hidden cameras to record what was taking place in Ayia Napa. The footage includes testimonies alleging that nightclub owners offered employment in exchange for sexual favours. It also refers to extremely low pay, illegal employment without workers being properly informed, and incidents involving threats and intimidation.
