More than 677,000 vehicles in Cyprus had renewed their road tax for 2026 by 8 March, according to the Road Transport Department. Authorities are urging vehicle owners to complete the process before the deadline to avoid surcharges and potential administrative issues.

Renewal figures so far

In a press release issued on Monday, the Road Transport Department said that 677,133 vehicles had renewed their road tax for 2026 by 8 March. The figure is slightly lower than the 680,670 vehicles recorded by the same date in 2025.

Renewals for the 2026 vehicle licence period began on 7 January 2026.

Deadline and surcharge

The department reminded the public that the deadline for renewing road tax without surcharge is Wednesday, 11 March 2026 at midnight.

Renewals made after that time will incur:

  • €10 surcharge, and
  • An additional 10% of the annual road tax amount.

Vehicle owners are advised not to wait until the final days to complete the process, as increased demand may cause system overload or delays.

Renewal conditions and options

Vehicle licences may be renewed for three, six, nine or 12 months, provided that:

  • The vehicle has a valid MOT, and
  • Insurance coverage is current.

Immobilisation requirement for unused vehicles

Drivers who renewed their licence for 2025 but do not intend to renew for 2026 must submit a vehicle immobilisation notice to the Road Transport Department.

Immobilisation can also be declared online through the department’s website. If no declaration is submitted, the obligation to pay road tax remains in force.

Vehicles at risk of deletion from the register

The department also warned that vehicles whose licence was not renewed for 2025 and were not declared immobilisedwill be removed from the register unless:

  • Outstanding road tax for 2025 is paid, and
  • The 2026 licence is renewed by midnight on 11 March 2026.
