Cyprus Among EU Leaders In Professional Homecare Use, Eurostat Data Show

Nearly two-thirds of households with long-term care needs rely on professional services.

Cyprus records one of the highest rates in the European Union for the use of professional homecare services, according to data published by Eurostat.

In 2024, 62.9% of people living in households with long-term care needs in Cyprus received professional homecare support, a significant increase compared with 45.8% in 2016.

Cyprus among the highest in the EU

According to Eurostat, Cyprus ranks among the EU countries with the highest reliance on professional homecare services. Denmark records the highest share at 63.5%, followed by Cyprus at 62.9% and Belgium at 52.9%.

The figures place Cyprus well above the EU average, highlighting the country’s relatively strong use of professional care services within households facing long-term health needs.

EU average significantly lower

Across the European Union, 8.5% of people in 2024 lived in households where at least one member required long-term care due to health problems.

Among those households, only 28.3% received professional homecare services, less than half the share recorded in Cyprus.

Lowest rates recorded in Eastern Europe

At the lower end of the scale, the smallest shares of professional homecare use were reported in Estonia (7.6%), Hungary (8.3%) and Poland (8.5%), indicating significant differences across the EU in access to or reliance on professional care services.
