Cyprus is bracing for a sharp cold snap, with falling temperatures, rain, strong winds and fresh snow expected in the mountains over the coming days.

According to the Meteorological Department, a weak low-pressure system is briefly affecting the area, with a colder air mass set to move in from Sunday. The result is a wintry turn, putting the island firmly back in the fridge.

On Saturday, the weather will be mainly cloudy. Local rain is expected, with a chance of a brief, isolated thunderstorm, mainly after midday. On the highest peaks of Troodos, snow or sleet is forecast.

Temperatures on Saturday will reach around 15 degrees Celsius inland, about 17 degrees on the coast, and around 5 degrees in the highest mountain areas. Frost is expected to form locally in the mountains overnight.

On Sunday, conditions will remain mostly cloudy. Local rain is expected, gradually becoming limited to the south-west and west of the island. Snowfall is forecast again in the highest mountain areas. Cyprus will also be affected by a strengthened north-easterly wind field.

By Monday, the weather will stay mainly cloudy and cold. Isolated rain is expected, mainly in the mountains, the west, and areas south of Troodos. Snowfall is forecast in the highest mountains and, during the afternoon, locally in lower mountain areas as well.

Tuesday will bring a brighter picture. The weather is expected to be mostly clear, but it will remain cold.

Temperatures will continue to fall gradually until Monday, with a noticeable drop. By Tuesday, no significant change is expected. Overall, temperatures will remain below the average for this time of year.

As of the latest update, snow depth at Chionistra stands at 26 centimetres, giving winter fans something to smile about.
