AI, Deepfakes and Nicosia's New Port

As tensions rise around Cyprus, social media is filling with AI-generated disaster videos. Some are terrifying. Some are ridiculous. Some even manage to make us crack a smile.

These are unusual days for our country. The news never stops, alerts keep coming and our feeds refresh faster than we can tell what is reality and what feels like a dark nightmare that has gone on a little too long.

Adding to the confusion is the explosion of AI-generated deepfake videos showing attacks, explosions and disasters supposedly happening somewhere near us. Some look convincing enough to raise your heart rate, while others remind us that even in stressful times, a moment of comic relief can help us decompress.

In the meantime, we went on a small Instagram deep dive, collecting the most surreal AI-generated clips we could find — inspired, in part, by Greek national TV announcing that the two Greek frigates had anchored in the port of Nicosia!
