Halloumi PDO: Farmers to Object to Any Change in the 51% Sheep and Goat Milk Rule

The farmers’ group says the ratio will remain in 2029, as cheesemakers prepare to ask for the quota to be changed.

The requirement for halloumi PDO to contain 51% sheep and goat milk will not change and will remain in place in 2029, according to information received by livestock farmers. This was stated by Neofytos Neofytou, president of the Voice of Livestock Farmers, speaking to CNA.

Cheesemakers to seek a change

According to Mr Neofytou, cheesemakers are expected to send a letter asking for the ratio to be changed, a position the Voice of Livestock Farmers disagrees with.

Farmers plan objections

Livestock farmers, he said, intend to submit objections both individually and collectively. He expressed confidence that these will not be rejected by the European Union and that the ratio will not be changed.

Warning over the future of halloumi

“If everyone does not help sheep and goat farming so that it can be rebuilt, halloumi will be lost,” he warned. He called on cheesemakers and cattle farmers to contribute to the effort to rebuild the sector.

Finally, he said that 95% of the members of the Voice of Livestock Farmers are sheep and goat farmers. He stressed that the organisation is concerned with livestock farming as a whole, does not serve any political party and works on a not-for-profit basis.
