Cypriot Antiquity Repatriated After Online Auction Intervention

Artefact identified in online auction and withdrawn before voluntary repatriation

The Department of Antiquities, Deputy Ministry of Culture announces that on the 27th of March 2026, a Cypriot antiquity was handed over to the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Washington. The antiquity had been identified in an online auction by the Archaeological Officers of the Department of Antiquities responsible for monitoring the illegal trafficking of Cypriot antiquities on the internet and was withdrawn following consultation with the auction house.

The antiquity consists of a Juglet of White Painted V ware dating to the Cypro-Archaic II period (600-480 BC).

The Department of Antiquities would like to express its gratitude to Kleinfelter's Auction Inc. and the possessor for their voluntary return of the antiquity to its country of origin, as well as to the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Washington for their cooperation and the coordination of the repatriation procedures.
