Wooomanhood 101: Unlearning the Rules

A darkly humorous dance-theatre performance by Art|Haus at Wherehaus 612 (October 10–11) explores how generations of women are shaped, and confined, by the invisible lessons of “becoming” female.

What does it really mean to “become” a woman and who gets to decide? Wooomanhood 101, a provocative new multidisciplinary dance-theatre performance by Art|Haus, takes audiences on a glittering, unsettling, and darkly humorous journey through the inherited rituals of femininity.

Created by Anthi Kettirou and co-written with dramaturg Christos Polymenakos, the performance exposes the often invisible grooming, social conditioning, and “how-to” rules that have been passed from woman to woman for generations, through family, social pressure, and now, the algorithmic gaze of social media.

Drawing from true events and online rhetoric, Wooomanhood 101 presents an “initiation protocol” for the modern woman, a theatrical tutorial that promises, with biting irony, to teach “everything you need to know to live a full and happy life.” Behind the glitter, though, lies a powerful critique: of the ways beauty, behavior, and self-worth are dictated and normalized, and how those patterns still echo in our bodies and voices today.

Blending AI-generated visuals, contemporary dance, original music by Giorgos Bizios, and a cast of performers, Areti Chourdaki, Maria Charalambous, and Semeli Paraïka,  the work creates a shifting landscape where the body finally speaks back. With choreography that oscillates between satire and sincerity, it becomes both confrontation and liberation — a poetic reconstruction of the spaces where fear takes root and womanhood is rewritten.

The project evolves from Kettirou’s earlier performance Introduction to Womanhood 101, expanding into a full-scale, multimedia production. This time, Art|Haus brings together artists from Cyprus and abroad in a creative dialogue that spans contemporary dramaturgy, AI art, dance, and performance studies, with a sense of humor as sharp as it is subversive.

Supported by the Deputy Ministry of Culture of Cyprus, with Cyprus Family Planning Association and Two Eleven Dance Studio, Wooomanhood 101 invites audiences aged 16+ to experience an audacious exploration of womanhood — one that’s at once glittering and raw, communal and deeply personal.
