A low-pressure system named Barbara is moving eastward and is set to affect Cyprus from late Tuesday through Thursday, according to the Cyprus Department of Meteorology and independent weather platforms such as KitasWeather.
Barbara will bring two main phases of rainfall: the first overnight Tuesday into early Wednesday, and a second, more widespread wave from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning. Temperatures are forecast to fall below seasonal averages, while winds will strengthen across the island.
Minor incidents reported so far
The Fire Service responded to 26 incidents in the past 24 hours, 19 fires and seven weather-related calls, including flooded basements, blocked drains and downed power lines. In Paphos, crews cleared rainwater from hotel premises and nearby roads after short-lived flooding, while the Electricity Authority (EAC) dealt with power issues caused by sparking cables in Larnaca and Famagusta. Authorities said no major damage has been recorded so far, though localised flooding and traffic disruptions remain possible as the system deepens over the island.
What to expect in the coming days
Wednesday
Mostly cloudy with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, especially in higher elevations and inland areas. Southwesterly winds moderate to strong (force 4-5), locally very strong along coasts. Temperatures up to 27°C in the lowlands and around 17°C in the Troodos region.
Thursday
Unsettled conditions persist into the morning, easing gradually by late afternoon. Winds remain strong at first before weakening overnight. Temperatures continue to drop, marking the coolest spell so far this autumn.
Friday and the weekend
Weather improves with intervals of sunshine and light cloud. Temperatures gradually return to near-normal levels for the season.
Areas most affected
Meteorologists warn that western and southwestern regions, particularly Paphos and Limassol, will face the heaviest rainfall and stronger gusts. Mountain communities may experience thunderstorms or small hail, while coastal zones are advised to expect rough seas and wave activity.
Public advice
-
Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall, especially on poorly drained roads.
-
Drive cautiously: wet roads and reduced visibility increase accident risk.
-
Secure outdoor objects and avoid standing near trees or power lines in strong winds.
-
Follow official weather bulletins and Civil Defence guidance.
The first test of the season
Barbara marks Cyprus’s first major autumn storm, a reminder that the dry season is over. While the system is not expected to cause widespread damage, its heavy rain and gusty winds warrant caution, especially in flood-prone or mountainous areas. Residents are advised to remain alert and stay informed as the system passes over the island.
