Turkish Cypriot party CTP representative Sami Özuslu has accused the ruling National Unity Party (UBP) of promoting the “two-state solution” resolution for pre-election gain, describing it as a “well-packaged plan for division.”
His remarks came as the “parliamentary committee on legal, political, foreign and defence affairs” in the"parliament" in the north approved the draft resolution by majority vote, with support from UBP “MPs.”
According to Turkish Cypriot online media, Özuslu argued that the initiative was politically motivated and timed to influence the upcoming elections. He said the founding text of regime in the north does not prevent negotiations for a federal settlement, on the contrary, it presupposes them, and warned that the proposal could raise issues of “unconstitutionality” and non-compliance with the “internal rules.”
He added that no representative of the “Attorney General’s Office” was present during the session and revealed that the name of Ersin Tatar had initially been included in the draft during the pre-election restriction period, something he called “illegal” and punishable by up to two years in prison. The name was later removed, he said.
Finally, Özuslu cautioned that the “two-state” line could jeopardise rights and arrangements gained through the settlement process, such as crossing facilitation, the Green Line Regulation, and aspects of EU acquis implementation, potentially returning Turkish Cypriots to pre-2004 conditions. He proposed that the issue be debated in the “plenary,” with the participation of Ersin Tatar.
