Cyprus will host the Athens Philharmonic International Peace Concert 2026 on the evening of 9 May, in the natural setting of the forest of Platres, positioning the country as a venue for high‑level cultural events with international reach.

The concert forms part of the Europe Day celebrations and is held under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, giving it a strong European and international dimension.

Central to the event is Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, widely regarded as a timeless symbol of peace, unity and brotherhood among nations. The work will be performed by the Athens Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of internationally acclaimed conductor Yannis Hadjiloizou, in what organisers describe as a performance combining technical precision with expressive power.

The concert will be broadcast live through the European Broadcasting Union network, allowing Cyprus to reach a global audience estimated at more than one billion viewers. The broadcast is expected to highlight both the artistic quality of the production and the island’s natural surroundings, placing Cyprus on the international cultural map.

Beyond its musical dimension, the event is presented as an act of cultural diplomacy, aiming to promote dialogue, cooperation and shared values through the universal language of music. The choice of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, closely linked to European ideals, adds symbolic weight to the initiative at a time of heightened regional and global challenges.

The concert is organised by the non‑profit organisation Cyprus Music Festival Platres, with the stated ambition of establishing it as a landmark cultural institution with international recognition. The initiative was envisioned and supported by the American Medical Center and its founder, Dr Marinos Soteriou, with a view to creating a high‑calibre cultural production with meaningful impact.

The event is supported by a range of corporate and institutional partners, while Alpha TV Cyprus is the media partner.

On 9 May, the forest of Platres is set to become an open natural stage where music transcends borders, delivering a message of peace and unity from Cyprus to the world.
