Bono has said he is grateful that Dolly Parton was able to record her final song with him just two months before her death.
Parton, who died aged 80 on 25 August following a short battle with cancer, appears on U2’s song “Torn”, which will feature on the Irish band’s forthcoming album, Carnaval De Luz. She recorded her vocals in June.
Parton co-wrote ‘Torn’
According to Entertainment and a press release published on Thursday, the duet is described as “a tender country song detailing broken family ties that has broader resonances”.
Parton co-wrote the track with U2 and Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid.
“When she got sick, she got out of her bed to sing this song,” Bono told Rolling Stone.
The session ultimately became Parton’s final vocal recording.
‘Dolly loved it’
According to Bono, Parton was able to hear the completed song and approve the final mix.
Daniel Lanois plays pedal steel on the track, while Larry Mullen Jr. contributes a drum part inspired by Bob Dylan’s Most of the Time.
Album producer Garrett “Jacknife” Lee told Rolling Stone that Parton was pleased with the finished recording.
“Dolly loved it,” Lee said. “She was so proud of her vocals and the recording. She was excited about it. We were very nervous that she might not approve it or feel comfortable with it, but she loved it.”
The collaboration will now be released as part of Carnaval De Luz, leaving “Torn” as the final vocal recording of Parton’s career.
