The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced on Tuesday night that she had a “good conversation” with U.S. President Donald Trump on strengthening economic pressure on Russia. In her statement, the Commission President said she would propose a faster phase-out of imports of Russian fossil fuels.

As she wrote on X, “I had a good discussion with the U.S. President to reinforce our joint efforts to increase economic pressure on Russia through additional measures.”

According to von der Leyen, “the Commission will soon present the 19th sanctions package, which will target cryptocurrencies, banks and energy.”

“Russia’s war economy, fuelled by fossil-fuel revenues, finances the slaughter in Ukraine,” the Commission President added. “To put an end to this, the Commission will propose accelerating the phased elimination of imports of Russian fossil fuels,” she said.

Later on Tuesday night, President Trump landed in London with his wife, Melania Trump, starting his second official visit to the United Kingdom.
