Cyprus is on track to begin exporting its natural gas to Europe for the first time between 2027 and 2028, via Egypt, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Sunday. Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a charity running event in Ayia Napa, the President confirmed that his upcoming visit to Egypt will focus exclusively on energy matters.

He is expected to participate in the EGYPES 2026 conference and exhibition, where, as he noted, “we will also sign a relevant agreement.”

“Our goal, and I believe we are on the right track after many years, is to achieve the first sale of Cypriot natural gas to Europe through Egypt around 2027–2028,” Christodoulides said.

He pointed out that the first discovery of natural gas within Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone dates back to 2011, adding that no commercial exploitation has taken place since.

“We are now in 2026, without any utilisation,” he said, underlining the significance of the current progress toward monetising the country’s energy resources.
