The Veterinary Services have intensified inspections at abattoirs, butcher shops and meat retail outlets from Saturday ahead of the Easter period, senior veterinary officer Sotiria Georgiadou told CNA. She added that, as of midday Saturday, no new cases of foot‑and‑mouth disease have been detected.

“If any violations are found, the products will be confiscated and the appropriate fines will be imposed,” the Veterinary Services spokesperson said, referring to market inspections.

The aim of the checks is to ensure that businesses continue to apply the required food safety systems so that meat products sold during the Easter period are safe for consumption.

Foot‑and‑mouth cases remain stable

Georgiadou said the number of infected units remains at 52, as no new cases emerged in laboratory tests carried out by Saturday midday.

The most recent case was detected on Friday at a farm in Geri, involving 144 cattle.

“We are continuing sampling and tracing. So far today, laboratory results are negative,” Georgiadou said.

She added that vaccinations of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs are continuing.
