Uber and Chinese tech company WeRide have officially launched the first commercial robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi, marking a major step forward in autonomous mobility in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The new service, supported by the Abu Dhabi Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), operates across the city’s most important central districts. Coverage of the autonomous taxi fleet currently reaches around 70% of Abu Dhabi’s downtown areas, including key landmarks.

Passengers traveling within designated zones can now request self‑driving taxis through the Uber Comfort or UberX options, or by selecting the dedicated “Autonomous” category directly in the Uber app.

For the moment, each robotaxi includes a safety operator inside the vehicle. A fully driverless phase of operations is planned for the next stage of the rollout.
