Passenger traffic was interrupted at Eindhoven airport in the southern Netherlands yesterday afternoon, as a swarm of drones appeared over and around the airfields.
The incident was made public today on X by Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans, who warned that military action is likely should the phenomenon continue.
'Anti-drone equipment is ready to respond, an investigation is underway', he added.
During a separate incident, in the space of hours yesterday, the Dutch army deployed weapons systems against drones at the Volkel airbase, just 40 kilometres from Eindhoven.
The Dutch defence ministry did not respond to questions on the origin of these particular drones, which have plagued European skies over the past few months, along with other aerial incursions.
Last September more than 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace and three Russian fighter jets violated the Estonian airspace for 12 minutes. Since then, frequent drone invasions have disrupted commercial flights across the continent.
Commission President Ursula Von Der Layen has described these incidents as 'hybrid war'.
