Tanker Hit by Projectiles in Waters North of Doha, Maritime Agency Says

UK Maritime Trade Operations reports two projectiles struck the vessel about 30 kilometres north of the Qatari capital.

A tanker was struck by two projectiles of unknown origin in waters about 30 kilometres north of Doha, the capital of Qatar, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Wednesday.

According to the maritime security agency, one of the projectiles caused a fire on board the vessel, which has since been extinguished, while the second projectile did not explode.

“The UKMTO can confirm that the vessel was struck by two projectiles. One caused a fire which has now been extinguished. The other did not detonate,” the agency said in a statement.

It added that it was not currently able to confirm the origin of the projectiles and that investigations were ongoing.

Earlier, the same source said it had been informed of the incident in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to the initial report, the tanker was struck on its port side by an unidentified projectile, causing damage to the hull above the waterline.

UKMTO said the crew were safe and confirmed that no environmental pollution had been detected following the incident.
