Italian prosecutors are continuing investigations in Rome into an alleged case of illegal surveillance and espionage, with authorities carrying out targeted raids as part of the inquiry.
The investigation focuses on a group known as “Squadra Fiore”, which is reported to consist of former members of Italy’s security services and is suspected of involvement in serious legal violations.
The network under investigation
Italian authorities are examining the structure and operations of the “Squadra Fiore”, which is alleged to have gained unauthorized access to information systems and breached personal data regulations. Seven individuals are currently under investigation, facing charges ranging from espionage to financial crimes.
Contracts and surveillance technology
Special attention is being paid to contracts awarded by Italy’s Internal Intelligence and Security Agency (AISI) to a private company, with a total value exceeding €39 million for the period 2022–2024. The contracts reportedly involved the supply of advanced surveillance technologies, including facial‑recognition software, signal‑jamming equipment and video‑monitoring infrastructure.
Key figures in the case
A key figure in the investigation is Giuseppe Del Deo, a former deputy director of an intelligence service who resigned in April 2025. He is being investigated over the alleged embezzlement of approximately €5 million linked to contracts awarded to a biometric‑technology company. Hackers and business figures with potential involvement are also under scrutiny.
The case covers the period from 2022 to the present, with authorities seeking to establish the full scope of the network’s activities and its connections.
