Nine out of ten Cypriots believe the EU should play a greater role in safeguarding its citizens from global crises and security threats, significantly higher than the EU average of 68%, according to a new Eurobarometer survey.
Citizens call for unity and stronger tools
The survey, commissioned by the European Parliament, shows broad support for greater unity among member states. Across the bloc, citizens want governments to act together to face today’s global challenges, a sentiment even stronger in Cyprus. Many also believe the Union needs more tools to respond effectively to a rapidly changing geopolitical environment.
Security and economy top the agenda
Asked about priorities, Europeans pointed first to defence and security, followed closely by competitiveness and the economy. In Cyprus, the demand for stronger security measures was particularly pronounced, while education and research also ranked high. At the level of the European Parliament, respondents across the EU said inflation and the cost of living should be the top concern, with Cypriots highlighting poverty reduction as their most pressing issue.
Strong support for joint investment and transparency
The survey also found that most Europeans want the EU to fund more projects collectively rather than leaving them to individual member states. Transparency remains a priority, with citizens insisting that the European Parliament should have the means to properly scrutinise EU spending.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said the findings confirm public expectations:
“European citizens want Europe to focus on security and the economy. They look to the EU for stability and expect a strong, united European voice in today’s uncertain world.”
The impact of EU membership
For most Europeans, the EU has a clear impact on daily life. A majority feel their country benefits from membership, pointing to peace, security, cooperation and economic growth. In Cyprus, citizens also highlighted job opportunities and development alongside the EU’s role in safeguarding stability.
The Spring 2025 Eurobarometer was conducted by research company Verian between 5 and 29 May across all 27 member states, including 501 interviews in Cyprus.
